Big Sister Blues

Big Sis Maren is struggling a bit. Nothing too harmful - to Luke, anyway. She swarms him every morning with hugs and kisses, and every time she walks by him she requests to "hold Luke." And, Maren inserted Luke all by herself into our ritual of saying goodnight to everybody in the house... But the Big Sister Blues are showing its face to us parentals. Today alone I've dealt with at least four tantrums. (Her trains are on a time-out.) Breastfeeding Luke while simultaneously entertaining Maren is a challenging feat, and it's beginning to tick her off. Every once in a while, Maren tells Andy or I to put "Luke down! Luke down!" when we're holding him. And just a few hours ago, Maren realized that I soothe a crying Luke with a nuk... so why not a crying Maren? Smart (and insistent) girl. Yesterday she had a very sad moment: I was feeding Luke and she just wanted me to hold her. She shed the saddest little tears before I could come up with some way to appease her. It's a bit heartbreaking, actually - to see your oldest flail so helplessly between joy and jealousy.

Soon enough she won't even remember life before Luke... right?
