From the Rentals:
Little Duke,
Wow, you sure happened upon us fast! You were due March 2nd, but WHAMO - February 15th was long enough of a wait for you! And now, a whole month has gone by with you in our midst. I have to say, your dad and I were both a little nervous about having baby #2. Don't get me wrong: we were thrilled to have you! But going from a 2-on-1 game to a 2-on-2 game requires a little different strategy. And after one month, there are moments when we think, with glib superiority, "No problem! What's the big deal?!" And then there are moments when we think back to the days of one child with laughter and ease: "What on earth did we do with all of our free time?!"
You are so sweet, Duke. Very serious (much like your sister was the first few months) - and very sweet. We hear from everyone that you're a mix of both your dad and I - some think you look very "Koering," others think you look just like your dad. ?? I can never tell, except that I think you're quite handsome--a real looker! (Everyone says so.) You are definitely a noise-maker, though. Not really a crier, which has us a bit puzzled (and thankful). You grunt and groan and squirm a lot (and cry sometimes, too, of course), like you're trying desperately to poop or something. But, since you're pooping quite well, we now think it's just your way of letting us know you're here and you've got something to say (what that is, we're still figuring out). Rarely is there a quiet moment from you. And on the rare occasion you're not making a peep you love to stare out the window, or (to my great delight) at your mama. You are sleeping pretty well - there have been a few nights where we'll get two four-hour stretches from you with one middle of the night feeding -- and wow are we loving that!!! But before we can feel too smug you give us one of those 'wake up every two hours and take two hours to get back to sleep' kind of nights. Not loving those so much. But it's a reminder that you are indeed your own very special person who we are getting to know. Your dad and I look at each other when we all pile into the car and think: holy cow, now we're really a family! You have made us a family in a whole new way, Duke.
Now, this next month: do us a favor and sleep at night and play during the day, ok?
love you,
mom and dad
From the Sister:
Duke! Mostly, I think you're cool. I do love to kiss you lots, especially before bedtime and naptime. But,
there are definitely moments when I just wish you would require a little less time and attention--time and attention I should be getting, of course. I'm also getting quite good at sticking your nuk in your mouth when mom and dad are busy and you're fussing a little bit. (Hey, man, I know how good the nuks are. You can count on me for that one.)I love you (I have to, you're my brother),
Munchkin
From the Dog:
Woof (This sucks.) Woof-woof (This double-sucks. I was second in-line behind that little girl, but now I'm third in line?! What's up with that? I'm already the most desperate dog in St. Paul, and now I'm third in line. How much do you want to bet they don't even think of themselves as a family of five? How much do you want to bet they just count the human beings? Even though I was here FIRST?! Got that, Duke? I was here first! Oh well. I never get to play with my friend Oscar anymore. They only take me on walks every once in a
while. They just put me in the back yard! It's sad. I'm sad. Man. I'm sad. And bored. Did I mention that I'm feeling sort of sad?) Woof. (This sucks. Hurry up and grow up a bit so we can play.)Woof,
Sky
