...occurred at the science museum today. The plan was for Duke to sleep through an hour or so morning activity, as he normally does. But you see, we are experiencing what I am calling his "six-week growth spurt." (Which followed his two, three, and four-week growth spurts.) This growth spurt has him nursing every hour and a half! Hour and a half! So, after I fed him this morning and quickly tried to get Munchkin dressed and ready, and the diaper bag ready, including snacks and a sippy cup, and a spare change of clothes, and where the hell are my keys?!, and it's raining- crap - Munchkin, you need a hat, and it would be nice to put on some deodorant, and Duke's crying, and now Munchkin's crying cause Duke's crying... it was already almost an hour into the 'off' time. We got to the science museum, wandered around for about twenty minutes... and then it started.
So, if it was just me, I would have planted myself somewhere private, you know? Like a bathroom or something? I mean, I'm all for breast-feeding; but I don't like to do it in public any more than people like to see me do it in public. But, seeing as I had Munchkin along I had to do it somewhere where she could be (and stay), too. I found a semi-quiet area near a bunch of books and a comfy chair and tried to get Munchkin interested in a puzzle or book or anything while I simultaneously pulled out the boob. One boob was quite successful, during which time Munchkin was satisfied with a stuffed bear and a book about stars. But one is not enough for my little Duke during this feeding frenzy. (Of course it's not enough. That would make my life too easy.) He was being his squirmy, grunty self, and I couldn't get him to latch on... and before I knew it the whole boob - indeed, the entire nipular area - was out there for the world to see. I look up to see these wide-eyed 7 or 8 year old boys who stand there, mouths agape. I awkwardly shove my boob back under my shirt, mumble an apology, and BURST INTO FLAMES. The hungry little man is going to have to wait, we're going home!!!!
