Summer Fun: the Butterfly Tent

We live in a fab neighborhood (we like to think it's fab, anyway), with lots of young families. We spend at least one night a week just sitting in someone's front yard - typically with a beer in hand - while the kids run around together around us. Fuuuuun!

So a few weeks ago, we traversed to the Butterfly Tent at the Como Zoo with our neighbors.

Here, the neighbor boys are patiently waiting for a beautiful butterfly to come and land on their hands...

Luke took a particular liking to the Butterflies, but not like the polite young neighbor boys. At one point, he - how can I say it? - manhandled one. Just grabbed and it, like he was going to pop it in his mouth or something. Luckily I leaped fast enough to save it from his grubby little fingies. But then a few moments later, he spied one just hanging out on the floor of the tent, and our little Lukey just lifted his foot and - SPLAT - squashed it. I wasn't fast enough for that one. Poor little butterfly.

The good news is that most butterflies don't live longer than two weeks. And my guess is that with the amount of kids in the tent that day, most of the Butterflies at the Como Zoo are lucky to make it through the day.

There was this one butterfly that took a liking for Maren. She sat on her shoulder for probably 5 minutes. Maren thinks maybe she liked her dress. :) And the great part was that Maren didn't panic, or get nervous... she just sat there, and took it all in. Ah, summer.
