Fonkoze

I just got an email from Andy's aunt and wanted to share with you the highlights...

She does some communications work for Fonkoze, a microlender in Haiti. I'm not sure if you know much about microlending, but it's really a brilliant and empowering initiative - give people some basics to build their own life. Person to person. And they will build the rest themselves.

In one of the poorest regions of the country, Fonkoze was piloting a new program for women too poor to participate in traditional microfinance (small business loans). The women were given 3 goats and/or a small supply of merchandise (rice, oil) with which to start their business. They met twice weekly with Fonkoze staff as they developed their business, built a home, added a latrine, and sent their children to school.

These women just graduated, and are on their way to building a sustainable life for them and their families.
