Ouch

This morning, in a sprint befit an olympian, and in protest of putting on her coat, Maren turned and ran directly into the corner of a door. Yikes, it was a fierce smack on the head which immediately created an enormous goose-egg on her forehead, complete with a black and blue line to represent the door. Ouch, ouch, ouch. After an understandably good cry, she was a trooper and didn't complain at all when we put ice on her head, and even took the job on herself when Luke started to fuss. I was afraid she might have a concussion, but within minutes she was up and playing again, like nothing had happened. Resilient little bugger. I caught it on film for Andy:

It's so horrible to see your child in pain! For a brief moment (thankfully it was very brief) I maybe could imagine a tiny tiny bit what it would be like to have a truly sick baby or child: to ask them to be brave and watch as they get rolled off into surgery, or to be useless when they need relief, and not know that they'll be ok. Man, having kids is a serious workout for the heart. It gets stretched between joy and fear about twenty times a day, doesn't it?
