Blog Action Day: a multi-media salad of consciousness raising goodness

I've posted about The Girl Effect before. My brother-in-law sent me this video, and I posted it immediately because, frankly, I was moved. I am someone who is moved when you put together strong words, powerful music, visual images... I mean, I think most people are. For the longest time, I've played with how words can move people--get them to think differently, live differently. It's why I love theater, it's why I love to write, it's why I love to coach speakers... Because they do - they can - they must.

And, I hope somewhere deep inside me that it's not just me and my progressive pals that are moved when we see and experience what life is like for someone else when they don't have the basics of what they need. I hope that it calls to all of us - collectively - to come together and do something.

But before we do, we have to first feel. That's not a comfortable idea, I suppose - having to feel our way through life. That's how you get hurt. But the people who feel their way through life - live it with hearts open and hurting and joyful - are the ones who are most connected to those who are in need, and who experience life to its very fullest.

Most of the time in my life I am the person who feels my way. If you want me to cry, there's a good bet I will. If you want me to laugh, I am happy to share the joy. But as life gets busier it is all too easy to get so distracted with me, me, me.... cutting myself off from the pain and realities of others.

So, today... I hope to help you - and me - feel a bit, and perhaps be moved to take some action - on the subject of poverty.

And really read and take in to the lyrics to this song.

And watch this:

And then listen to this:

My call is for each of you is to pass along something today to someone else that opened your heart to someone else who doesn't have the basics of what they need each day. And then, of course... do something about it.

Sal- thanks for sharing this, and for your words and your work and your passion. Tonight I was re-reading "Reading Lolita in Tehran" (trying to reconcile myself with Henry James) and she quoted that same Mr. James, a part of letter he wrote to a friend during WWI: "I am incapable of telling you not to repine and rebel, because I have so, to my cost, the imagination of all things, and because i am incapable of telling you not to feel. Feel, feel, I say-feel for all you're worth, and even if it half kills you, for that is the only way to live, especially to live at this terrible pressure, and the only way to honour and celebrate these admirable beings who are our pride and inspiration."

Thanks... and much love dear friend- Sara Kay
