the treasure hunt: part 1

Ever heard of Geocaching? I certainly hadn't, and then Andy somehow came across the website... and four days later, I think it's safe to say he's found a new hobby. And by 'hobby' something he's giddy like a school kid about.

The idea with geocaching is that random people all across the country take a simple plastic box (or other such container), and hide it somewhere with a journal or log, including some random little bits of what we're calling "treasure." Then they hide it... and record where it is on this website... and then other people go and find it.

Some rules about geocaching...
  • "Cache in, trash out" - meaning, pick up some junk while you're at it and make the earth just a bit cleaner. That's cool!
  • "If you take something, leave something." Again, what a great ethos...
  • And... "Keep it secret, keep it safe." Haha, just kidding. It all feels very mission impossible/lord of the rings-y to me. Although there is a rule about making sure you don't let the "muggles" (non-geocaching people) see what you're doing and ruin all the fun for us cachers. Just using the word "muggle" in practical conversation has totally won me over on it.
We got some video from the kids' second "treasure hunting" adventure up at the cabin. Even Grandma was totally into it!
